Founded in 1943, the Chitrasena Dance Company has been the vehicle for the innovative work of the great dance maestro, Chtirasena. His work both in traditional dance forms and contemporary dance transformed dance theatre in Sri Lanka. Since the inception of the Chitrasena Dance Company, there have been more than 40 productions, consisting of the national dances and rhythms of Sri Lanka as well as innumerable ballets (dance-dramas) based on mythological and localized themes. Nala Damayanthi, Karadiya, Kinkini Kolama and Nirthanjali are some of the internationally acclaimed masterpieces of the Chitrasena Dance Company. Chitrasena and his wife Vajira also became Sri Lanka’s pre-eminent cultural ambassadors to the rest of the world, leading their Dance Ensemble to all corners of the globe with over 44 international performances in 27 countries. The tours included East and West Europe, the United States, Great Britain, the former USSR, Canada, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong, Taipei, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Bangladesh and the Middle East. The extensive repertoire of the Company has received rave reviews from local and international critics alike.
