Sybil Wettasinghe’s name is synonymous with children’s literature in Sri Lanka. Generations of Sri Lankan children have familiarized themselves with her delightful illustrations and her unique, colourful stories. Sybil Wettasinghe’s creations have entertained children for over five decades. Her career has been prolific; she has written and illustrated over 200 books, which include timeless favourites such as The Umbrella Thief, The Runaway Beard and How the Devil Ran Away, in both the Sinhalese and English languages, and she has been published both locally and internationally. Her work has been translated into many languages across the world. Her stories are enriched with references to local customs, elements of cultural imagery and the splendor of Sri Lanka’s natural environment. She has been the recipient of many accolades and awards, including the State Literary Award and the Gratiaen Prize.
