Sandhya Rao is an editor at the prestigious Chennai-based Tulika Publishers which has pioneered new standards in the production and content of high-quality children’s books in India. Working with books for children was a long-cherished dream for which she happily gave up a stable career in mainstream journalism with Indian Express, India Today and Frontline magazine. She writes in English and Hindi and has written over 20 books for children, including two little ones in which the pictures move (Grandma’s Eyes and Dosa) and two on Mahatma Gandhi: a biography called Picture Gandhi and a whimsical idea called My Gandhi Scrapbook. Her book My Friend, the Sea, written in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami, won a prize at the Berlin Bookfair in 2005, and My Mother’s Sari was acclaimed as an outstanding international book by the Children’s Book Council, USA, in 2007. She is the Hindi translator of the Swedish children’s classic by Astrid Lindgren, Pippi Longstrump. For many years, she conducted a popular writing workshop called iMAGINE WORDS for children in Chennai. She regularly visits schools for readings and interactions with children. She writes occasionally for newspapers and magazines.
