Rana Dasgupta was born in Canterbury, grew up in Cambridge, and lives today in Delhi, India. His first novel, Tokyo Cancelled (2005), has been widely acclaimed. Billed as a modern-day Canterbury Tales, it follows thirteen passengers stuck overnight in an airport and their stories from different cities in the world. His story-telling style draws on contemporary fairytales, and the mythical and surreal. Tokyo Cancelled was shortlisted for the 2005 John Llewellyn Rhys Prize. Dasgupta's second novel, Solo (2009) has also received great critical acclaim – Salman Rushdie has said of it, ‘Solo confirms Rana Dasgupta as the most unexpected and original Indian writer of his generation’.
