Sarnarth Banerjee was born in Calcutta. He is a graphic novelist, artist and film-maker, and creator of what was widely recognized as India’s first graphic novel: Corridor (2004). Set in Delhi, it maps the isolation and alienation of urban life, through a number of colourful and idiosyncratic characters. Banerjee, who studied Biochemistry at the Universirty of Delhi, then went on to graduate from Goldsmiths College, London with an MA in Image and Communication. He frequently exhibits his drawings, sound projects and videos in India and overseas. His exhibitions have travelled as far as London and Berlin. He wrote and directed a 20 minute clay-animation film, ‘Hakim Tartoosi’s Potency Oil’ (2001), which was awarded the First Prize at the Mocha Awards, in Bombay in 2006. His other films vary in content and themes, from female infanticide, in ‘God’s Left Hand’ to fantasy in ‘Chronicles of Dodo’. He is the co-founder of Phantomville, a graphic novel publishing house, whose aim is to provide Indian writers/artists a platform on which to produce graphic novels of a high standard.
